Welcome back to our K-5 Music Classes page. Can you believe that our summer break is over and it is ready to get back into the beat of learning! I, for one, am so excited about getting the year started and working with your child again!
Each of our K-5 classes will be learning about music through our 6 music elements - rhythm, texture & harmony, form, melody, timbre, and expression. We involve singing, dancing, physical movements, performing on instruments - all to grow through our music.
We are now in the middle of our first grading period. Something different for all of us this year is that, along with our Essential Standards for K-5 Music, we are also incorporating 21st Century Standards. Our goal is to advance our students in what they will need to learn and grow through music as well as learning how to apply their learning for what our students will need to know to be successful in the 21st century! That is a mouthful! Basically, we want our students to be successful in ALL aspects of their education, and we want our students to be able to connect what they learn in music to what they will need to be a SUCCESSFUL 21st century citizen. That is a tall order, but we are excited about being a part of it for your child.
Kindergarten is working with rhythm. We will explore the steady beat, same & different patterns, how our loco and non-loco motor movements join with rhythm, and the use of long and short sounds in rhythm.
Grade 1 is working with rhythm and melody. With melody we are learning how to use our voice through solfege singing. We enjoy seeing how far we can use our voice and how easy it is to match our voice to the piano. We are learning about melodic ostinatos - how to play them as a part of our songs. In rhythm we are constantly improving on "reading" our rhythm examples. We have also found out how we can use our rhythm in reading poems, sentences, and stories.
Grade 2 is focusing on rhythm. We will be involved with the steady beat in music and life, the use of quarter notes and rests, eight notes and rests, sixteenth notes, and patterns. Our 2nd grade students will also begin to study the science of sound in music where we will learn about the ear and about how vibrations create different sounds in our instruments. The 2nd grade will also be involved in a musical production entitled "The Revolt of the Foolish Molar", where our students will put music to learning about good hygiene practices for our teeth! I will be in touch with you to let you know how our parents can be of help! Be on the watch!
Grade 3 is looking into melody. We will start with melodic direction before heading into the use of phrases, steps & skips, the pentatonic scale (whew!), and then the use of octaves. As the 3rd grade moves on through this year, our students will have the opportunity to learn how to play the recorder in our music class. This will begin after our Christmas break, so I won't share too much with you at this point. Be on the look-out, though, for more news to come in November, 2012!
Grade 4 will also be looking into melody. They will be working with the same steps as Grade 3, but will move at their level and then also include sequences and the 6-note and major scale.
Grade 5 rounds it all out also with melody. We will be learning about the staff and all the parts that go into writing music. One of our activities will include learning how to write on the staff and create our own short melodies.
Each class - within each grade level - begins their classes with a solfege activity, where the students match Mr. Arny in singing the same melodic pattern that he sings to them. Our last activity before beginning the lesson is to "patsch" a rhythm pattern.
Patsching involves using arm movement to show the pulse as we speak the rhythm out loud.
All of these are new for our students, but they have been real "troopers" in moving along and growing in their skills with each class.
Whew! That was a lot to cover!
Keep checking up on us to see where we go from here!
